Small Battles

Most of the apartment is childproofed, meaning anything he sees he can get into. Except the kitchen which we gate off, and our room that we normally keep closed. Even in those places, there are only a few things we don't want him getting to. How is it that out of an entire room he always finds the things he shouldn't have? I was in our room on the computer this morning, so he was in here with me - this is what transpired during five minutes:

Evan - I want to see what's in the file cabinet, ooh, keys and wires...
Mom - No, Evan (shuts drawer)
Evan - Wahhh, Wahhh, Wahhh (shaking hands and stomping feet)
Evan - really, I want to open that drawer
Mom - (holds drawer closed with foot so she can get work done)
Evan - Wahh, Wahh, Wahh, how about the bottom drawer
Mom - (Now holding both drawers shut with foot)
Evan - Wahh, Wahh, Wahh, are you seeing this?
Mom - (Trying hard to ignore small tantrum)
Evan - Fine, I'll find something else...what about phone chargers plugged in to the wall, those come out right?
Mom - Evan, No (while holding his hands firmly)
Evan - Wahh, Wahh, Wahh
Mom - (Changes charges out for outlet covers)
Evan - Yeah, well I can try to take those off too you know
Mom - Evan, mommy said no (while holding his hands firmly and redirecting him to something else)
Evan - Wahh, Wahh, Wahh, what about that fan over there? You know I like to stick my fingers in it, or even better, pull the cord out of the socket.
Mom - No, Evan (redirecting him to something else)
Evan - Wahh, Wahh, Wahh - Really I want over there.
Mom - (holding leg out to block access to fan)
Evan - I don't think you heard me, I want over there - Wahh, Wahh, Wahh (sitting on the floor crying) Are you seeing this, I'm really not happy about this.
Mom - (Trying to ignore now medium sized tantrum)
Evan - Alright, fine...if you're not going to watch my tantrum, then I'm finding something else...what about your underwear drawer? Do you care if I run around putting your underwear on my head?
Mom - Finally, I can get something done!
