Work, with some random pictures

Tomorrow I'll wrap up my third week of school/work and it's been alright. The second day back was probably the worst. It wasn't quite as busy as the first day, so I had more time to be homesick...and kids-sick...and pajamas-sick...and iChatting with Jeff-sick. Since then, though, routine has set in and my three days go by in a blur. I've almost finished a full month, and that feels good.

I've been getting questions recently about my career goals or lack there of, especially from those of you who read this post last year, so I decided it might be a good idea to give an update. I've spent time checking out my options and I've come to an unfortunate conclusion. There are lots of things I'd like to do more than what I do now, but I'd have to do most of them 5 days/week to get comparable pay. For instance, I recently told Jeff that I'd love to work at Half Price Books as the person who tells you how much your books are worth. I don't think I can work a job like that 3 days per week, minus 13 weeks a year and make it very profitable. As much as I dislike my job sometimes, I'd rather do it, than work more doing something else.

But I've found an acceptable compromise - I'm going to work even less. This is actually more of a game changer than it sounds, though, because it significantly changes my job description. Out of my 3 days per week, one is a day that I bill insurance and it comes with requirements and paperwork and hoops to jump that my other two days don't have. And that's the day I'll be giving up. With that day gone, I'll just be your average school counselor/social worker and my job will instantly become a lot less clinical. And I think I'll be a lot happier. Not to mention the "working less" part of that story. If I think my week goes by fast now, I can only imagine how it will feel one day lighter!

Jeff and I felt it was really important for me to take Evan to each of his three days of preschool, and I'll be able to do that now, and Aida will get quality time with me (shopping) in the mornings. And I'll feel a lot less strained during the week with one more day to get things done and be home with the kids. I had hoped my new schedule would start in September, but the official word is October. It is official though, so I'm excited!

Maybe I'll also use that extra day to blog more...we'll see...
